Nel 1966 ci fu una riunione tra le due leghe di allora, la NFL (national football league) e la AFL (american football league). A seguito di un accordo esordì nel 1970 la NFL (che incorporava le due leghe mantenendo il nome della prima). La NFL fu divisa in due conference, le attuali AFC e NFC, le cui vincitrici si affrontano nella partita di finale: IL SUPER BOWL.
